  • BTF and TE achieve Equality Standard Preliminary Level

UK Sport has announced that British Triathlon and Triathlon England have successfully reached the Preliminary level of the Equality Standard.

The Equality Standard is a framework for assisting sports organisations to widen access and reduce inequalities in sport and physical activity from under representative individuals, groups and communities including females, ethnic minority groups and disabled people. It is based around two broad themes on developing both an organisation and developing the services it provides. There are four levels of achievement: Foundation, Preliminary, Intermediate and Advanced.

To date only 41 sporting organisations have achieved the Preliminary Level accreditation, so both Triathlon England and British Triathlon can consider themselves at the forefront of removing barriers within sport.

Julian Wills, National Equity Manager, said:"Both British Triathlon and Triathlon England are delighted to have achieved the Preliminary level of the Equality Standard, as this recognises the ongoing equality work we are undertaking. The staff and board members of both organisations are committed to ongoing equality work and are dedicated to achieving progressively higher levels of the Equality Standard.?

?In celebrating the achievement of this standard, I would like to recognise the significant amount of effort on the part of both staff and volunteers within our sport that has gone in to demonstrate our commitment to equitable sport,? said Zara Hyde Peters, British Triathlon Chief Executive. ?This is not just a paper commitment as we are demonstrating by moving up through the levels of standard; it is the way we want our sport to be.?

"The attainment of this standard indicates a willingness of the whole range of participants to subscribe to the principles of equity in our sport, no matter what the nature of the contribution is nor the level at which the contribution takes place,? commented Jem Lawson, Chairman of Triathlon England.
